Pink Steel is a Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat Team in Pittsburgh. Dr. Don McKenzie in Canada did a study that showed that the motion of paddling a dragon boat decreased the chance of lymphedema by 70% following breast cancer treatment. It also increased survivorship by 50%. 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of BCS dragon boating worldwide and the 10th anniversary for Pink Steel. There are currently over 151 teams in 12 nations around the world. Many of our members have written chapters in 2 editions of “Reaching For Life Through Dragon Boating”. The sport has helped us reach for life and live beyond a breast cancer diagnosis. You do not have to be an athlete to join!! We come from all different backgrounds and have benefited from the exercise, team bonding, and support. Many of us came to the team battered and worn from treatment and have emerged as healthy and happy paddlers ready to take on the world!!
