GRAND ROUNDS PLENARY SESSION | 9-10am
Individualizing Radiation Treatment in Early-Stage Breast Cancer: Choosing the Right Treatment for the Right Patient
Lori Pierce, MD, FASTRO, FASCO, University of Michigan
Most women with early-stage breast cancer have a choice between breast conservation and mastectomy. Scientific randomized clinical trials have shown that some women with an early-stage breast cancer do equally well with breast conservation with radiation as they would with mastectomy. This plenary session will examine how clinical trials and research have changed the landscape of individualized radiation options and non-radiation treatments for patients choosing breast conservation.
WORKSHOPS: SESSION 1 | 10:30-11:30am
Breast Cancer Recurrence: Updates on Clinical Trials from 2-PREVENT Breast Cancer TCE and Studies Assessing and Treating Minimal Residual Disease
Amy Clark, MD, MSCE, University of Pennsylvania
This workshop will focus on breast cancer recurrence after diagnosis of early-stage breast cancer. It will review the standard treatment and discuss additional risk factors that may also impact the risk of recurrence. The concept of disseminated tumor cells, what they are and how to detect them, will specifically be addressed. The workshop will conclude by reviewing the clinical trials that are aiming to eliminate disseminated tumor cells with the goal of preventing breast cancer recurrence.

Challenges and Advancements in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer
Charles Geyer, MD, NSABP Foundation & UPMC Hillman Cancer Center
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) describes invasive breast cancers which do not have either estrogen or progesterone receptors (ER or PR) found in most breast cancers and do not have an increased amount of the HER2 protein, meaning that the breast cancer cells test “negative” on these three routine tests. TNBC, which accounts for about 10-15% of all breast cancers, tends to grow more quickly than other types of invasive breast cancers, and there are fewer treatment options. This session will review management of this important subtype of breast cancer, emphasizing recent advancements in treatment.
