Awards

This year, we honor the achievements and contributions of four difference-makers in the fields of breast cancer research, advocacy and action.

Potamkin Prize Winner Dr. Angela DeMichele of Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center is an nationally recognized breast cancer researcher, oncologist and professor focused on studying why cancer spreads and how to prevent breast cancer metastasis. Our Pink Ribbon Awardees – Igor Skinder and Senate Majority Leader Kim Ward – have made an extraordinary impact on the world through advocacy and activism. Our Shining Light Awardee, CJ’s Tire and Automotive, proves that every one of its locations is “changing more than tires” by sharing the PBCC’s mission and raising funds for our programs and services each year. Our 2022 awardees remind us that the future is bright and full of hope!

Senate Majority Leader Kim Ward

Pink Ribbon Award

Pennsylvania's 39th District
Westmoreland County

When Pennsylvania Senate Majority Leader Kim Ward was diagnosed with breast cancer, she felt compelled to use her platform to help other women across the state. Senator Ward partnered with the PA Breast Cancer Coalition on a statewide “Don’t Miss your Mammogram” campaign, encouraging women to schedule annual screenings, educating Pennsylvanians on the importance of early detection and offering free mobile mammograms. Through the initiative’s video public service announcements, news conferences and events, “Don’t Miss your Mammogram” has reached over 13 million Pennsylvanians and counting. Senator Ward recently introduced a critical bill for genetic testing, and counseling, which now awaits a vote in the Senate:

  • Senate Bill 1330 will eliminate out-of-pocket costs for genetic testing and counseling for hereditary cancers

Thank you, Senator Ward for your selfless service to women, families and researchers across the state. We salute you and celebrate you as a 2022 Pink Ribbon Awardee!

Since then, Igor has created grassroots partner events in support of the Coalition’s programs and services and taken the PBCC’s mission of “finding a cure for breast cancer now… so our daughters don’t have to” to the national level. Igor says he believes he is a “member of the Coalition for life” and we could not be more fortunate to have him as a partner in this fight.
