Free Public Reception is hosted at Concilio on October 22nd at 11:30 am

The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition announces the opening of "67 Women-67 Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in Pennsylvania" at Concilio, 705 North Franklin Street, in Philadelphia. The public is invited to an opening reception October 22nd at 11:30 a.m. This inspirational traveling photo exhibit is on display at Concilio from October 21 through October 31. All activities are free and open to the public and Spanish materials are available.

The opening reception features guest speakers:

Pat Halpin-Murphy, PBCC President and Founder

John Domzalski, Philadelphia Health Commissioner

Dr. Carmen Febo, Executive Director, Taller Puerto Rriqueno

"67 Women-67 Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in Pennsylvania" is an educational work of art sponsored by the PA Breast Cancer Coalition and funded by the PA Department of Health. The exhibit reflects the cultural and ethnic diversity across the state and features a picture and short quote from at least one woman in each of Pennsylvania's 67 counties. Philadelphia women featured in the exhibit include Patricia Scott Beach, Janet Cash, Linda Creed, Hilda Diaz, Novella Lyons, Judge Thomasine Tynes, and Delgracia Williams.

As an outreach effort of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition "67 Women - 67 Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in Pennsylvania" encourages women to learn about early detection and celebrates the life, courage, hope and dignity of women and families that have battled breast cancer. The traveling photo exhibit will visit Philadelphia because of the efforts of a committee that represents Latino community organizations including Esperanza Health Center, Drexel University, the Philadelphia Department of Health, Cancer Information Service, the Philadelphia School District, Temple University, Telemundo, APM, Inc., Resales Communications, and Fox Chase Cancer Center.

"Visiting the traveling photo exhibit is a wonderful opportunity to make sure that messages concerning the health and welfare of families reach every community in our Commonwealth. The 67 Women—67 Counties photo exhibit—which is both inspiring and emotional---is a very effective and moving way to increase breast cancer awareness in Pennsylvania," Pennsylvania First Lady Kathy Schweiker said. Mrs. Schweiker serves as Honorary Chair of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition.

Pat Halpin-Murphy, PBCC President and Founder, encourages everyone to visit the exhibit. "Breast cancer is not a rare event separate from the fabrics of our lives. It is our mothers, our daughters, our friends, ourselves. We must educate ourselves about this insidious disease and fight to find a cure now… so our daughters won’t have to."

Carmen Paris, Deputy Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia Department of Public Health, said, "Bringing this exhibit to Philadelphia and the Latino community is a tremendous service because not only does the exhibit encourage women to learn about early detection it is also an inspiring and effective medium. Breast Cancer isn't contained to one race, background, or education and we need to raise awareness. Education is one way that we can fight this disease."

The PBCC, founded in 1993, is a non-profit organization. It serves as the only statewide grassroots organization that speaks to and for breast cancer survivors. This year over 12,000 Pennsylvania women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. More than 2,300 will lose their lives to the disease.

The PBCC’s mission is to find a cure for breast cancer and to improve the quality of breast cancer education, research and outreach in the state. The PBCC serves the state’s 67 counties through a network of County Captains, Regional Vice Presidents and a statewide Board of Directors and provides programs such as the Income Tax Check-Off, Mother's Day Mammograms®, the Keystone Breast Cancer Conference and the virtual support group Friends Like Me."
