Fountains Turn Pink Statewide To Kick-Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Bright pink fountains will be flowing throughout Pennsylvania in October to kick off breast cancer awareness month. The East Wing Fountain at the State Capitol in Harrisburg will turn pink on October 1, followed by the fountain at the Point State Park in Pittsburgh on October 3 and the Perry Square Fountain at North Park Row in Erie on October 4.

The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC) is proud to join together with Leslie Stiles, Executive Director for the PA Commission for Women and PBCC Honorary Chair, in celebrating the start of Breast Cancer Awareness month. These three pink fountains serve as a wonderful visual that underlines and intensifies the critical importance of education, early detection and treatment of breast cancer.

“It is a profound statement to see the fountains turn bright pink throughout Pennsylvania. It serves as a tribute to the brave women who have fought and are fighting this dreadful disease,” said Pat Halpin-Murphy, PBCC President and Founder. “With every fountain that turns pink across the state, we are reminded that there are more than two million breast cancer survivors alive today in the United States, and we must continue to promote our mission of finding a cure for breast cancer now…so our daughters won’t have to.©

The pink water reminds people of the importance of early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Nearly all breast cancers can be treated successfully if found early. When breast cancer is found in its earliest stage, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.

“This striking pink fountain is a powerful visual reminder that we have to keep fighting this disease with all our resources,” said Leslie Stiles, also a breast cancer survivor. “The better we are able to communicate and educate, the greater the likelihood that more women will get a mammogram and more women will tell a friend to do the same.”
