Pat Halpin-Murphy, President & Founder Of The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, Recognized With Two Central PA Awards

Recipient of the Central Penn Business Journal’s Nonprofit Innovation Award
For Leadership Excellence and the Soroptimist International of West Shore’s
“Making a Difference for Women” Award

EPHRATA, Pa. – Pat Halpin-Murphy, President & Founder of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC), was selected to receive the Central Penn Business Journal’s Nonprofit Innovation Award for Leadership Excellence as well as the Soroptimist International of West Shore’s “Making a Difference for Women” Award.  Both of these awards honor her for her extensive breast cancer advocacy and outreach work in leading the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition.

Pat Halpin-Murphy began the PBCC in 1993 to give survivors in Pennsylvania a voice for action and change in the state. Because of her leadership, uninsured and underinsured women 40 and up in Pennsylvania now have access to free mammograms. She also championed legislation ending the time limits on reconstructive surgery in Pennsylvania, and she worked to bring the state Income Tax Check-Off for Breast Cancer Research to fruition, which has raised nearly 2 million dollars for research here in Pennsylvania.

The Nonprofit Innovation Award is the second award for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition. Last year, the organization won an award in the program category for their insurance guidebook, Breast Cancer: Covered or Not?.  The book was co-authored by Halpin-Murphy and Dr. Linda Rhodes, former PA Secretary of Aging, to serve as a tool to help breast cancer patients focus their time and energy on beating the disease. Halpin-Murphy said, “I am honored to have been selected for these awards, and I share them with all of those who have courageously fought their own battle with breast cancer. Together I am confident that we will once day find a cure for this disease.”

The PA Breast Cancer Coalition represents, supports and serves breast cancer survivors and their families in Pennsylvania through educational programming, legislative advocacy and unique outreach initiatives. The PBCC is a statewide non-profit organization that creates the hope of a brighter tomorrow by providing action and information to women with breast cancer today.
