EPHRATA, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC) received the 2006 Nonprofit Innovation Award from the Central Penn Business Journal for their new book, Breast Cancer: Covered or Not? A Guide on Insurance. The book is an insurance and employment guide that helps breast cancer patients sort through the often complex and confusing issues of insurance coverage that arise after a breast cancer diagnosis.
Breast Cancer: Covered or Not? was co-authored by Pat Halpin-Murphy, PBCC president & founder, and Dr. Linda Rhodes, former PA Secretary of Aging, to serve as a tool to help breast cancer patients focus their time and energy on beating the disease, rather than on insurance and employment issues.
Halpin-Murphy said, “The publication of Breast Cancer: Covered or Not? is the realization of a dream – a dream that women facing breast cancer would have access to resources to better equip them for their battle. We are thrilled that our dream came true, and that the Nonprofit Innovation Award judges recognize the value and importance of this project and the work of the PBCC on behalf of breast cancer patients, survivors, and their families.”
This easy to read – easy to understand – and now award-winning – book is available to individuals and non-profits for $5 each, and is also available for free downloading at www.pabreastcancer.org. The PBCC has also donated a copy of the guidebook to every public library in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Rhodes, author of two national-selling books on caregiving, viewed the project as an honor in itself. “After listening to hundreds of women tell their stories of stress, confusion and hardship in navigating the insurance maze to receive treatment for breast cancer, this project became a mission of empowerment. It was an honor to co-author the book on behalf of the PBCC.”
The PBCC, founded in 1993, is a non-profit organization and PA’s only statewide grassroots organization that speaks to and for breast cancer survivors. This year, more than 12,000 Pennsylvania women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. More than 2,300 will lose their lives to the disease. The PBCC’s mission is to find a cure for breast cancer and to improve the quality of breast cancer education, research and outreach in the state.
