EPHRATA, Pa. -- Pat Halpin-Murphy, president and founder of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC), announced the appointment of Leslie Stiles as honorary chair of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition at a luncheon at the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg on Wednesday, June 22. Stiles is the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Commission for Women.
“We are thrilled that Leslie Stiles will serve as our Honorary Chair. Her remarkable strength, grace, and her proven ability to connect with women across the Commonwealth will truly be an asset to the PBCC in our mission of finding a cure now . . . so our daughters won’t have to!” said Halpin-Murphy.
Under Stiles’ leadership as Executive Director, the Pennsylvania Commission for Women has initiated a number of new programs. Among the most notable is the inception of the Pennsylvania Governor’s Conference for Women, which will celebrate its second year this November.
“I’m thrilled and honored to accept this position,” Stiles said. “Working with Pat Halpin-Murphy and the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition is truly a gift – the perfect complement to our outreach efforts at the Pennsylvania Commission for Women. As a breast cancer survivor, I am committed to getting the message of breast health awareness and early detection out to the women of this State. The vision and strength of PBCC are an inspiration to all of us in our relentless fight against this disease.”
Judge Marjorie O. Rendell said, “I've often heard Leslie say that women's issues are everyone's issues. As a breast cancer survivor and the Executive Director of the PA Commission for Women, no one understands better the challenges and impact of this devastating disease on women and their families. As the newly appointed Honorary Chair of the PA Breast Cancer Coalition, she brings her leadership and a passionate commitment toward making a real difference.”
Traditionally, Pennsylvania’s First Ladies have served as PBCC honorary chairs. Because Judge Rendell’s position with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit precludes her from serving as honorary chair, Judge Rendell suggested Leslie Anne Miller, a breast cancer survivor who was at that time General Counsel to the Governor, to serve in that capacity. Following Miller’s resignation from her post as General Counsel, Stiles was selected as honorary chair. Miller was elected as the Executive Vice-President on the PBCC Board of Directors.
“Leslie Anne Miller will continue to be a valuable contributor to advancing the work and mission of the PBCC as Executive Vice-President. We are blessed to welcome her to our Board,” Halpin-Murphy said.
The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition is a non-profit organization that serves each of the state's 67 counties through a network of County Captains, Regional Vice Presidents and a statewide Board of Directors. The mission of the PBCC is to improve the quality of breast cancer education, research and outreach in the state and to find a cure for breast cancer now…so our daughters won't have to.©
