PA Breast Cancer Coalition Premieres Play At Legacy of Love Program Tuesday Night

Harrisburg--The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC) will present WOMEN WHO HAVE WALKED THROUGH THE FIRE, a collection of monologues and scenes about living with breast cancer, at the Legacy of Love program on Tuesday, October 5, starting at 7 p.m. in the Sunoco Performance Theater at the Whitaker Center, 222 Market Street.

Legacy of Love is sponsored by HealthAmerica and is free and open to the public.

WOMEN WHO HAVE WALKED THROUGH THE FIRE is a production of Random Acts
of Theater at the Triangle Theater in Philadelphia and will have its Harrisburg premiere on Tuesday. It features Lynn Boianelli, Tina Brock, Michael Brumbaugh, Tanesha Ford, Bonnie Grant, Kati Kertesz and Jane Stojak.

Pat Halpin-Murphy, president and founder of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, commended Jane Stojak and Bonnie Grant, co-producers of the production, for having created a moving and often funny performance that incorporates original material about living with breast cancer.

Bonnie Grant, who has worked in theater for years, is Deputy City Representative for Philadelphia in her professional life. Grant is also a breast cancer survivor.

The program begins at 7 p.m. with the presentation of the PBCC S.T.A.R. Volunteer (Special Thanks and Recognition) Award, presented to the Lebanon-Lancaster Intermediate Unit (IU) 13 School to Work Transition Center class from Ephrata.

The 13 students have been invaluable volunteers in helping PBCC prepare for the Keystone Breast Cancer Conference, which takes place on Wednesday, October 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The current students are: Stephinie Beckman, Ashley Brill, Daniel Buckwalter, Cody Clark, Jason Fisher, Laurie Herzog, Jennifer Hoover, Kelly McCardle, Tashina Miller, Nicole Moyer and Brandon Rehak. The class is taught by Amy Kirchner and John Robbins and supervised by Brenda Kauffman.

A reception for breast cancer survivors, family members, and advocates will be held in the Kunkel Gallery at the Whitaker Center, following the performance.

The PBCC, founded in 1993, is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending the breast cancer epidemic through research, education, outreach and advocacy. As the only statewide grassroots organization that speaks to and for breast cancer survivors, the PBCC insured the passage of
several crucial pieces of Commonwealth legislation:
- The Breast and Cervical Cancer Research Act, which allows taxpayers to donate all or part of their state income tax refunds to breast and cervical cancer research; and
- The Breast Cancer Reconstructive Surgery Act, which mandates insurance coverage for post- mastectomy breast reconstruction and prohibits outpatient mastectomies.

The PBCC serves each of the Commonwealth's 67 counties through the Income Tax Check-Off, Mother's Day Mammograms®, the Keystone Breast Cancer Conference, and the photo exhibit, "67 Women, 67 Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in Pennsylvania.”
