and two afternoon educational workshops, the
Pink Ribbon Awards Luncheon and closing Pink
Ribbon Reception.
“Breast cancer is a disease that affects
women of all ages and races. While it often
impedes the body, we know that, with support
and dedication, it can never defeat the spirit,” said
Leslie Anne Miller, General Counsel to Governor
Edward G. Rendell and PBCC Honorary Chair. “As
the PBCC Honorary Chair, I am proud to witness
the dedication of the PBCC and am thrilled to
be able to attend this year's Conference. I
know that programs such as the Keystone Breast
Cancer Conference will continue to give hope
to women and their families who are living with
this disease.”
“The Keystone Breast Cancer Conference
provides education, outreach and the latest
information on breast cancer from world renowned
experts”, said Pat Halpin-Murphy, PBCC
President & Founder. “This year's
conference is another milestone in our fight
to stop the tragedy of breast cancer for women
and their families.”
This year’s Vivian and Meyer P. Potamkin
Foundation Award for Breast Cancer Research
recipient is Lawrence J. Solin, MD of the University
of Pennsylvania Medical Center. The Potamkin
Foundation Award is presented each year to an
individual who is performing outstanding work
in the field of breast cancer research. It is
part of a PBCC endowment from Vivian and Meyer
P. Potamkin, the late Philadelphia philanthropists.
The PBCC’s Pink Ribbon Award is presented
for outstanding leadership in breast cancer
research, education, treatment and advocacy.
This year’s award recipients are Jonathan
Newman, Chairman of the PA Liquor Control Board,
and Charlotte Asherman, Former Executive Director
of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition.
As Chairman of the PA Liquor Control Board,
Jonathan Newman introduced the PBCC to leaders
in the alcohol beverage industry. He helped
to create relationships that generate generous
contributions and help to fund the PBCC’s
Stepping Stone Award given each year to a researcher
at the Keystone Breast Cancer Conference.
The PBCC's second Pink Ribbon Award is presented
to Charlotte Asherman. For ten years as Executive
Director, she helped build the PBCC into a strong,
dynamic and effective organization. She set
out to create a powerful force for information
and action in this state, so that no other woman
would face breast cancer alone, and she accomplished
that.
Charlotte Asherman shared her voice and vision
at countless photo exhibit openings, Keystone
Breast Cancer Conferences, support group meetings,
community events and legislative rallies. She
created excitement about the PBCC’s work
wherever she went. Her drive and dedication
have saved lives and touched hearts across this
state.
“We are very honored to present such
special recognition to this year’s Keystone
Breast Cancer Conference awardees,” said
Pat Halpin-Murphy, PBCC President and Founder. “Leading
by their example of community service and leadership,
our award winners give women and their families
across the state renewed hope that the PBCC
will fulfill our mission to find a cure for
breast cancer now…so our daughters won’t
have to.”
Bonnie Harr, COO of Aestique Medical Center
and PBCC Westmoreland County Captain, is receiving
the Shining Light Award for exceptional grassroots
leadership in Breast Cancer outreach and advocacy.
Also highlighted at the conference is the Tuesday,
October 5, Legacy of Love Reception in which
the S.T.A.R. Volunteer Award will be presented
to the IU 13 School to Work Transition Center
Class from Ephrata.
