First Lady Kathy Schweiker
to Receive Pink Ribbon Award at Special Day of
Recognition, Learning and Hope
(Ephrata, PA) The Pennsylvania Breast
Cancer Coalition is holding the Keystone Breast
Cancer Conference at the Harrisburg Hilton &
Towers October 9 and 10, 2002. The October 10th
conference provides participants with
an opportunity to explore a variety of issues
relating to breast cancer while recognizing outstanding
community role models and medical professionals.
The October 10th conference features
First Lady Kathy Schweiker, PBCC Honorary Chair
and John Glick, MD, Director of the Abramson Cancer
Center of the University of Pennsylvania. Katie
Harman, Miss America 2002, is also featured as
the Wednesday October 9th Legacy of Love entertainment
and speaker.
Mrs. Schweiker is receiving this year’s
Pink Ribbon Award. She is an outstanding role
model for volunteerism and community service.
As a longtime advocate of PBCC programs
she actively supports the Keystone Breast Cancer
Conference and graciously serves as the keynote
speaker at our traveling photo exhibit openings
for “67 Women-67 Counties: Facing Breast
Cancer in Pennsylvania,” Mother’s
Day Mammograms® press conferences, and Income
Tax Check Off community press events.
“I am very pleased to receive this year’s
Pink Ribbon Award from the PBCC,” stated
Mrs. Schweiker. “As a longtime volunteer
and now the PBCC Honorary Chair I have been proud
to witness the outstanding growth of the PBCC
and thrilled to have shared in so many victories
with this grassroots organization and its many
exceptional volunteers. I know that they
will continue to give hope to women and their
families living with this disease through innovative
research, education and outreach for many years
to come.”
This year’s Vivian and Meyer P.
Potamkin Foundation Award for Breast Cancer Research
goes to John Glick, MD, PBCC Board Member and
Past President of the American Society of Clinical
Oncology. Dr. Glick dedicates his life
to clinical research and is a respected leader
in the medical, scientific and research communities.
Dr. Glick stated, “I have
committed my career to helping people with cancer
and to improving their prognosis through the development
of innovative clinical trials. Every breast
cancer patient deserves the best opportunity to
be cured.”
“We are very honored to present such special
recognition to this year’s Keystone Breast
Cancer Conference awardees,” said Pat
Halpin-Murphy, PBCC President and Founder.
“Leading by their example of community service
and leadership initiative First Lady Kathy Schweiker
and Dr. John Glick give women and their families
across the state renewed hope that the
PBCC will fulfill our mission to find a cure
for breast cancer now…so our daughters won’t
have to.”
Conference organizers are also pleased to announce
a special evening event with Miss America
2002, Katie Harman. Miss Harman is joining PBCC
President and Founder Pat Halpin-Murphy during
the presentation of this year’s PBCC Volunteer
award. The ceremony is to be held during
the Legacy of Love Reception set for 7:00 PM Wednesday
October 9 in the Whitaker Center for Science and
the Arts adjacent to the Harrisburg Hilton. As
Miss America, Miss Harman lends her voice to the
fight against breast cancer and is a strong advocate
for women facing this disease.
Also highlighted at the conference are twelve
educational workshops that allow participants
to gather information from some of the world’s
best doctors and professionals working with women
affected by breast cancer. These sessions will
include topics such as genetic testing, breast
cancer in young women, the mind/body connection
and clinical trials. Continuing education credits
are available for nurses, radiologists, and social
workers.
The conference registration fee includes the
Wednesday Legacy of Love evening reception with
Katie Harman, continental breakfast on Thursday,
one morning and one afternoon educational workshop,
and the Pink Ribbon Awards Luncheon and closing
Pink Ribbon Reception. Discounted rooms are available
at the Harrisburg Hilton for conference participants.
The PBCC, founded in 1993, is a non-profit
organization. It serves as the only statewide
grassroots organization that speaks to and for
breast cancer survivors. This year over 12,000
Pennsylvania women will be diagnosed with breast
cancer. More than 2,300 will lose their lives
to the disease. The PBCC's mission is to find
a cure for breast cancer and to improve the quality
of breast cancer education, research and outreach
in the state.
The PBCC serves each of the Commonwealth's
67 counties through the Income Tax Check-Off,
Mother's Day Mammograms®, the Keystone Breast
Cancer Conference, our virtual support group Friends
Like Me, and the photo exhibit, "67 Women,
67 Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in Pennsylvania."
