As I read and hear about the exciting news from the NCI about the STAR Trial results, I am amazed at how far breast cancer research and the breast cancer movement have come in the twelve short years since the PBCC began. Did you know that breast cancer survivors make up the largest group of all the cancer survivors walking around on this green earth? That’s an incredible testament to better detection methods, improved treatment options and breast cancer survivors’ impressive will to live.
In 1994, our traveling photo exhibit was funded by the PA Department of Health for a 1-year tour, visiting 5 sites across the state. This month, when the exhibit visits Reading Hospital, it marks the 80th time that the exhibit goes on display. The Department still funds this unique and uplifting exhibit, and people still see the need to bring it to their own communities. How fortunate we are to have such tremendous support for this one-of-a-kind display. If you haven’t ever seen the exhibit in person, I encourage you to go. Click here to see the upcoming exhibit schedule. It travels to Berks, Lycoming, Philadelphia and Elk counties this year.
The exhibit has stood the test of time, but many things have changed. Our office has moved twice. Our staff has increased exponentially (from one!). And we’ve implemented new programs and initiatives to keep up with the changing needs of breast cancer survivors and their families.
The PBCC is an ever-growing, ever-changing, dynamic organization. If there’s something more you think we can be doing for Pennsylvania’s breast cancer survivors and their families, please email me. I welcome your suggestions.
Happy Mother’s Day!
