August 2006

This month, I open up this space to our intern, Sarah. Sarah goes back to Elizabethtown College in a few weeks, but I wanted her to have the opportunity to share her observations about the PBCC from an intern’s perspective. What did she learn? What surprised her? What did she get out of it? Will she ever work in non-profits again? Here is what she has to say:

When Heather first asked me to write in her message this month, the only thing I could think was “Where do I begin?” After giving the topic some thought, I realized that there really was only one place to start – and that was with the wonderful women that welcomed me into their office for the last eight months. Each person is a unique piece to the PBCC puzzle, and has helped to give me an experience that I will take with me in whatever my future holds – I can’t begin to thank them enough!

The things I have done this year went far beyond my expectations of being an intern. Within my first week at the PBCC, I was already traveling to Philadelphia for my first press conference, while most of my friends were standing behind a copier at their internships.

In my time at the PBCC I have traveled to committee meetings, attended exhibit openings, written press releases and had many other opportunities in and out of the office – each strengthening my desire to work in a non-profit organization some day. The number of events attended and the amount of work that comes out of an office with so few people will never cease to amaze me.

Going back to school this month will be bittersweet – it certainly won’t be the same without coming into the office – but keep your eyes peeled at PBCC events…you never know where I just might turn up!

Sarah, will be missed more than she knows. She was a wonderful addition to our staff, jumped right in to any project, and made us laugh on a regular basis. We welcome her back anytime. Look for her at the PBCC’s Annual Conference in October! She will be there helping out. It’s what she does best.
