Wow! What an amazing Breast Cancer Awareness Month it was. Our busiest ever by far. Visitors from far and wide attended the Keystone Breast Cancer Conference, Divas of Jazz raised their voices for the cause, our traveling photo exhibit was out and about, fountain waters turned bright pink, and we officially unveiled the pink ribbon license plate in the capitol rotunda.
The PBCC staff traveled 2,000 miles last month spreading the message of the importance of early detection and breast cancer awareness to every corner of the state. I salute them for doing so with pride and dedication. It’s a big state, and we’re a staff of only seven.
But just because the travel or the activities may taper off for the next few months, it doesn’t mean we’re any less committed to doing our jobs, or any less effective. We might be working behind the scenes in the capitol hallways trying to get legislation passed that will better the lives of women everywhere. We might be busy assembling 100 “Friends Like Me” gift boxes, because we continue to get requests every day. Or we might be looking ahead to next year’s conference and talking about how we can make it even bigger and better.
As you find yourself in what sometimes feels like a 2-month long holiday season, find comfort in knowing that the PBCC is not resting. We do the work in honor of all the survivors, their families, and those who might hear the words “you have breast cancer” today or tomorrow. We do not rest just because October is over. Every day is October to us. Happy holidays.
