May 2008

Time flies. It’s not just a cliché…time really does fly.  There is no way it can be May 1st already.  I have a vivid memory of very recently putting away the Christmas decorations. Does everyone feel this way?  Is everyone overwhelmed?  These are the things I ask myself as I look at the clock for the first time today and realize it is only a couple minutes away from lunchtime and my butt hasn’t left my chair. Where did the morning go?  Oh that’s right.  It flew away.

Every year, before we get into the heart of summer and all the fun summer plans, I vow that I am not going to “over-schedule” myself.  I will take more time for just me.  It’s okay to have some breaks in the action.  But guess what.  Every year at this time it happens.  I look ahead to my calendar and see very little white space already.  How did this happen?  Time, as it turns out, does not only fly, it also sneaks up on you.

I don’t know how to make time stop, and I certainly am not the right person to be doling out any words of wisdom on this topic.  But I do know that if we don’t fight it, time will most definitely win.  We have to be aware of it.  Know how it works.  Look for its tricks.

Don’t let time steal precious moments away from you, your life, or your loved ones.  All we really know that we have, is right now.  Another cliché?  Perhaps.  But clichés have become clichés because they are at least partly true.

I encourage you to look at your calendar.  Maybe you can’t erase or delete anything.  But you can start saying no more often.  It’s okay to say no to the jewelry party or the baby shower.  Your friends and family will still love you, and they will understand.  Do it for yourself.
