President’s Corner: One Month Away! PBCC to Celebrate 20 Years of Education, Advocacy & Outreach at Annual Conference

Posted By on September 16th, 2013 at 9:00 am | 19 comments.

Pat Halpin-Murphy, President & FounderWe’re one month away from the PA Breast Cancer Coalition’s 20th Anniversary Conference!  The PA Breast Cancer Coalition is thrilled to reflect on the past 20 years of advocacy, outreach and survivorship with YOU.  Not only are we looking back, we are looking to the future of breast cancer in Pennsylvania and beyond.  This year’s Conference will feature the very latest in breast cancer research and education, including a special presentation by world-renowned researcher and PA native Dr. Dennis Slamon.

The PBCC has chosen a special Shining Light Awardee for its 20th Anniversary Conference.  Westmoreland Walks has been one of the most successful PBCC Grassroots Partners for the past 12 years.  The Board of Directors works tirelessly, year-round, on events and breast cancer outreach, including the annual Westmoreland Walks event at Twin Lakes Park.

We caught up with the hard-working Westmoreland Walks board members at Twin Lakes.  Click on the video below to learn more about their journey promoting breast cancer awareness in Western PA.

Take Action. Save Lives. Tell Your State Representative to Support Dense Breast Legislation!

Posted By on September 16th, 2013 at 8:57 am | 13 comments.

Capitol and Pink RibbonWomen in PA need YOUR help!  The PBCC is working on a crucial piece of legislation that would require facilities offering mammograms to notify women with dense breast tissue.  Women with dense breasts have an increased risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer at a later, more dangerous stage.  The Senate has passed this legislation, but we’re only halfway there.

This is where YOU come in…

The House of Representatives needs to know the importance of this legislation.  We have created an advocacy toolkit with more information including video, sample letters and details on dense breast tissue.  Call your state representative and tell him or her to support legislation that would save lives in PA!

If you’re a person who was diagnosed with breast cancer at a late stage because of dense breast tissue, please contact us at 800-377-8828 or email us at Info@PABreastCancer.org.

Pretty in Pink Bingo PicPretty in Pink Bingo was the name of the game on August 4, 2013 when survivors, friends and even Miss Philadelphia Francesca Ruscio showed up to have fun and raise money for the PBCC! The event was held at Northampton Community Center and participants had the chance to win exciting door prizes and play 21 games of bingo while enjoying refreshments and the company of fellow community members on a lovely summer afternoon.
In total, this entertaining event raised $950 to help women and their families across PA battling breast cancer. Special thanks to coordinators Agnes White and Roseann Davis-Yurasits for all of their hard work in making this such a successful event, along with Janet Murphy who volunteered her time to represent the PBCC! The PBCC couldn’t do the work that we do without support of our Grassroots Partners and dedicated volunteers. Find out more information on hosting your own event or participating as a volunteer today!

Study: Tamoxifen Cuts Second Cancer Risk in BRCA Carriers

Posted By on September 16th, 2013 at 8:56 am | 20 comments.

Tamoxifen for PL New research shows that the drug Tamoxifen can greatly reduce the risk of a second breast cancer diagnosis in women who carry the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes.  Women with the “breast cancer genes” are not often offered Tamoxifen as part of a treatment plan.  These findings could change that.

Investigators at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Australia studied thousands of women with the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes over a span of 8 years.  During that time, women with the BRCA1 mutation were 63 percent less likely to develop a second cancer after taking Tamoxifen and women with the BRCA2 gene had a 67 percent lower risk with the drug.

Pittsburgh Researchers Develop First 3-D Guided Breast Biopsy in U.S.

Posted By on September 16th, 2013 at 8:56 am | 23 comments.

3-D Biopsy PicThis Summer,  the first 3-D guided breast biopsy was performed at the Magee-Women’s Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.   In conjunction with the 3-D biopsy, Magee radiologists also helped to develop  3-D guided mammography, which creates a complete reconstruction of the breast.  Radiologists can then use the reconstruction to identify abnormalities, which can be difficult to detect with traditional screening methods.  Why is this so important?

3-D guided breast biopsies are revolutionary because they allow for faster lesion targeting, reduced patient procedure time and reduced radiation exposure.  The 3-D biopsies are particularly important for women with breast lesions that are difficult to reach and for women with arthritis or other physical limitations, all of which make traditional biopsies more challenging.

Dr. Sumkin, D.O., chief of radiology at Magee, said, “The ability for us to provide 3-D guided biopsy to our patients represents an exciting new example of our leadership in this area. Magee radiologists continue to play a pivotal role in the development and advancement of this technology.”

Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC researchers expect to see more women getting routine screening for breast cancer due to their latest technological advancements.
